Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County (1998)

Director Dean Alioto

In 1998, director Dean Alioto remade his found footage film UFO Abduction for Showtime to discredit the original film which was real found footage film of alien abductions. That’s actually a real conspiracy theory. In reality, Showtime gave him lots of money to update it and he even got a few actors that viewers might recognise.

Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County (1998)

It’s a pretty straight up remake, with a few additions. The aliens effect the people with some kind of noise and there are insert of random people talking about the found footage, nothing that really adds to the experience except for a scene where a grey checks out the camcorder. The greys interact more with the people, which is nice, but the inserts just ruin the flow and were probably added so the film would fit a movie slot with ads. The mom is more of a drunk and the kids are just as creepy.

Unlike the original film, the remake is made with studio interference. That is at least what I’m blaming. It’s more of a product, less organic. The cameraman’s hand is a lot steadier, and he can point the camera at some of the scariest shit without flinching. The original could have been real found footage; the remake is obviously a TV film.
