A bunch of kids go to a haunted farm to make a scarecrow for a scarecrow festival. They didn’t want to go, it’s punishment for something. It’s detention much like in The Breakfast Club, however, unlike The Breakfast Club, these kids have to fight an ancient evil in scarecrow form. Also, unlike The Breakfast Club, these kids are pretty much all the same character except for the one that looks like a budget Ron Weasley. There are also teachers, one played by Lacey Chabert.
The scarecrow is a pretty cool and scary creature and looks alright even though it’s CGI in a SyFy film. It hunts its victims through fields and a forest, while they try in desperation to escape. It lurks and crawls, jumps from ceilings and slithers from the ground. The death scenes are also quite gory for a SyFy film, and inventive. It can enter you by your feet, pass through your body and exit through your mouth like it’s nothing.
The acting is mostly mediocre, although Lacey Chabert could have become a Scream Queen if she hadn’t devoted her life to wedding themed Hallmark films. It’s well directed and shot and looks good for a TV movie, which is a surprise since it’s the same director that made Shark Killer, which couldn’t decide what it wanted to be.
This could easily be remade into a real budgeted horror flick, at least the premise and creature.
