An unsuspecting fish swims. A shark comes out from the dark and eats it. Is it the shark that will attack Malibu? Not so fast, buster. Out of the more dark, a bigger shark arrives and eats the other shark. It’s a motherfucking goblin shark—the ugliest of the sharks. Now that’s a shark that can attack Malibu. This scene is followed by the title sequence that depicts surfers and has a song about surfing called “On A Summer Breeze.” Talk about a false sense of security.
There are characters, most of them are lifeguards, and they have connections and wants and needs and I can’t remember any of them. A tsunami hits the beach and floods areas and a bunch of goblin sharks run wild. Our heroes must traverse the wilderness of that one Miami beach to get to a safe haven while the sharks try to eat them. Where is FEMA is my question.
The sharks turn out to be much smaller than the opening scene suggested to allow the third act, which takes place indoors, to happen. It’s lackluster, but not as lackluster as the acting which is borderline abysmal.
I always check the trivia section on films I watch and this one had “Peta Wilson appeared in Mercy 2000 with Ellen Barkin.” Ellen Barkin is not in this film and has no connection to it so I think this trivia bit might be written by Peta Wilson to flex. Now that’s something.
